Who I Am

Design educator, not just instructor

Azura discovered her passion for design education back in 2010 while freelancing as a graphic designer in Kuala Lumpur. She noticed something that changed her path completely — most struggling designers weren’t failing because they couldn’t use software. They were failing because they didn’t understand the fundamentals. That gap between tool proficiency and actual design thinking became her mission to close.

She joined DesignPath Academy in 2015 as a design instructor and hasn’t looked back. Over the past nine years, she’s trained over 2,500 beginner designers across Kuala Lumpur and Penang, developed curriculum that’s now used at all DesignPath locations, and become the person other educators ask when they’re stuck on how to explain layout grids or why color relationships matter.

Her approach is straightforward — strong fundamentals first, tools second. She holds a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication from UiTM Shah Alam and genuinely believes that understanding design principles transforms how anyone works, regardless of which software they’re using.

What I Teach

Core focus areas for beginner designers

These three areas form the foundation that makes every design decision make sense

Layout fundamentals

Grid systems aren’t rules to follow blindly — they’re tools that organize chaos. Azura teaches how grids work, why they matter, and when you can break them intentionally. Students learn composition, alignment, whitespace, and how layout decisions affect how people actually read and understand your designs.

Color theory

Too many designers pick colors and hope they work together. Azura shows the science behind color harmony, contrast, psychology, and accessibility. You’ll learn to build palettes with confidence, understand why certain combinations work, and make color choices that serve your design goals — not just look pretty.

Typography basics

Typography is where most beginner designers struggle most. Font selection, pairing, hierarchy, spacing, readability — it’s a lot. Azura breaks it down into clear principles and practical methods. After her courses, students don’t just pick fonts; they understand how typefaces work together and why typography choices matter as much as images.

Teaching Philosophy

Fundamentals first, tools second

“A designer who understands grid systems can work in any software. But someone who’s just learned the tool without understanding why layouts matter? They’re stuck the moment they hit a new platform. I teach principles, not buttons.”

— Azura Tan

Understanding over memorization

Design principles aren’t rules to memorize — they’re ways of thinking about visual communication. Azura teaches the why behind each principle so students can apply them in any situation.

Accessibility from day one

Good design works for everyone. Color contrast, readable typography, clear hierarchy — these aren’t afterthoughts. They’re core to everything she teaches from the beginning.

Practical, not theoretical

Every concept is taught through real projects. Students work with actual design problems, make decisions, and see immediate results. That’s how learning actually sticks.
